Leave Someone Smiling: Heidelberg Week 4

Subject: Re: Mother's Day

Mom and Dad,

That's true, Skyping is never long enough. It's ok, I'll be home for Christmas, you can count on that ;)

I feel a lot better today, good sleep and a little break work wonders. [DN: Hayden was feeling a little under the weather Sunday when we skyped]

Falltorstraße 29, Neckargemünd is my address. And the Mission home is the place to send that, yep.

My week: Well, we have little Spain going on over here in Germany, so on Monday we had the opportunity to help one of the members here work on his German. He is preparing for a B1 level test and we aren't native speakers or anything, but we can explain Grammar principles and things (at least Elder Clemente can in Spanish, it helps me learn more Spanish too. Elder Clemente also took 4 years of high school German and did an exchange program for 3 weeks to Southern Germany). This man is working so hard to learn German but the fast paced language learning is just hard to balance with taking care of his kids and working as well. It's really nice to be able to help people in such a direct way and see them progress so clearly. In the spirit of teaching a man to fish, we also talked about the importance of speaking a lot to learn the language and invited him to make a specific plan for German learning out of chapter 7 in Preach my Gospel.

We spent a lot of time talking to people in the hot sunny streets this week as well. Like I said, I'm in another stage of really enjoying that, but my body wasn't to happy with something, maybe the temperature change, maybe pollen in the air, lots of sun, business of missionary life. So I was sick on Saturday and Sunday, I still have a bit of a cough, but I feel a lot better now. It was really nice to chat on Sunday night, and HAPPY MOTHERS DAY again mom :) Love you.

One thing that I thought was interesting this week was just the difference in the people you meet on a mission. At one train stop a women walked up to us and asked her not to talk to her, saying that we were brainwashed and weird stuff like that. We told her of course that that's not true and tried a little bit to clear up some of the lies that she believes, but she wouldn't listen. She would finish talking, then remember something else and come back and make another comment. Like 4 times. It didn't really bother us because there wasn't any truth in any of her comments, it was just sad how ignorant people can be sometimes. As we arrived at the next train station we had a really nice conversation with a smiley man who complemented our "excellent German" (hervorragendes Deutsch) and wished us "much success" (viel Erfolg) in our day. People. Be a person that leaves someone smiling!
I love in the Book of Mormon in the book of 3 Nephi chapter 19, describing Jesus it says that 'his countenance did smile upon them'. Not only does Jesus leave people smiling, he leaves them full of love in their hearts, something that we can all strive for.

Thank you,
Hayden
